Flu Shot Guidelines For South Hamilton Kids

Every year as winter approaches, many South Hamilton parents wonder if they should get their kids a flu shot.

Everyone gets the flu, right? Is it that big of a deal?

In most cases, the flu is an inconvenience, but not detrimental beyond missing a few days of school. However, South Hamilton pediatricians caution that it is extremely important for high risk kids to get a flu shot. Ditto if your child is in regular contact with a high risk person.

What qualifies a child as high risk? South Hamilton experts say that chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma puts a child at greater risk because the flu can contribute to serious complications. Many South Hamilton doctors also recommend flu shots for all children under five years old. South Hamilton experts advise getting your child’s flu vaccination as early as possible, in August or September or as soon as it is available, to protect them through the entire season which generally lasts from October to April.

Remember that two shots are required for children under the age of eight, given four weeks apart, for full protection your first year of getting vaccinated. Just one shot per year is needed after that.

Flumist is a nasal spray vaccine that can be given to healthy children ages two and up, an option that can be more child friendly. Side effects from either method of vaccination may include runny nose, muscle aches, vomiting, or low grade fever. The new flu vaccines offer protection from both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Most Manchester parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Manchester is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Manchester – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes New Hampshire kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Manchester kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Manchester neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Hamilton, Essex, and South Hamilton parents may do themselves and their children a favor by adding to their kids’ emotional, physical, and intellectual health by letting them play in the dirt!

As a parent of active Manchester children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your South Hamilton area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest Wenham drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.

AAP Immunization Information For South Hamilton Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many South Hamilton people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of New Hampshire children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to Wenham children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our New Hampshire communities.

Recently, I have noticed that many South Hamilton parents are questioning the children’s immunization schedule. I came across an informative American Academy of Pediatrics FAQ sheet that addresses most of the common concerns.
